Introduction | “Why Discipleship?”

Session 1 | “Reading the Bible”

  • Be sure to watch the video that goes with this lesson before meeting.

    1. Did you relate to Owen’s story about struggling to understand the Bible when you read it? What was your Bible study strategy when that was the case?

    2. Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17. What is this verse saying? What stands out the most to you?

    3. Why is important to start with understanding the CONTEXT before trying to understand what the verses are saying? How do we determine the CONTEXT of a passage of scripture?

    4. Why is it important to seek to understand what the text says instead of just “what it means to me?”

    5. Why is applying what we learn essential to our spiritual growth? How can we do that?

    6. Practice: Choose one of the texts from the video and share with each what the context is, what the text is saying, and how you can apply it in your life.

    7. Close with getting a real prayer request and praying for one another.

Session 2 | “Reaching People for Jesus”

  • Be sure to watch the video that goes with this lesson before meeting.

    1. Have you ever struggled with praying? If so, what made it hard for you?

    2. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. How could we apply these verses to help us pray “breathe prayers?”

    3. Read Luke 5:15-16. One of the reasons we should be people who WITHDRAW and PRAY is because Jesus modeled this for us. Let’s work on a plan to be able to do this better.

    4. Work with each other to come up with a PLACE, a TIME, and a PLAN so you can pursue excellence in withdrawing and praying.

    5. A good strategy is the A-C-T-S plan. Those letters stand for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. If you’d like to see an example of that, check out our latest 24 hours of prayer material on website under the resources tab.

    6. What is something God is showing you right now?

    7. Close by giving each other a REAL prayer request, updating each other on your WORK, LIVE, and PLAY lists, and praying for one another.

  • Be sure to watch the video that goes with this lesson before meeting.

    1. What’s a way you served God before and really enjoyed it?

    2. Why is it important to serve God through the church?

    3. Joe brought up that we serve because Jesus served (Philippians 2:5-7), to build up the church (Ephesians 4:11-12), and to fulfill our purpose (1 Peter 4:10-11). Which one of these reasons resonates with you the most?

    4. If you are serving currently, do you really like where you are serving? If not, would you like to try something new this semester?

    5. Check out our ways to serve page on our church website. What feels like the best area for you to serve? Are you ready to start?

    6. What is something God is showing you right now in your life?

    7. Close by giving each other a REAL prayer request, updating each other on your WORK, LIVE, and PLAY lists, and praying for one another.
